Truck full of ribeye steaks goes up in flames on Missouri highway

PHELPS COUNTY, Mo. (KOLR) - A tractor-trailer carrying 40,000 pounds of ribeye steaks went up in flames on a Missouri highway.

Officials with the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District in Phelps County shared news of the blaze on Monday morning, writing on Facebook that firefighters had extinguished "a well involved commercial vehicle fire" on Interstate 74.

The highway's eastbound lanes were temporarily closed to traffic as well, official said.

A few hours later, officials shared video of firefighters driving to the scene of the fire, with smoke seen billowing from the burning tractor-trailer.

After extinguishing the fire, Doolittle Rural Fire Protection said the steaks were considered "a total loss."

Viewers on Facebook, meanwhile, joked that the blaze must've been "the best smelling fire" or the "biggest barbecue" the firefighters had ever responded to.

"It's nice to see our brave first responders in action when the steaks are high," another wrote.

A few viewers, however, took the incident more seriously.

"That's scary as hell rolling up on a semi trailer to put a fire out without knowing what's in it at first," one Facebook user wrote.
