Making sure you stay safe in the extreme cold temperatures

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- With a cold weather advisory in effect for central Indiana Sunday night leading into Monday, you need to take the necessary steps to stay safe in extreme temperatures.

All steps start with proper attire whenever going outside.

WISH-TV Medical Expert Dr. Janel Gordon said making sure you are layered in loose-fitting clothing that is insulated will help keep you warm.

Covering your head when outside is important, Gordon said, as you can lose 50% of our body heat if it is not covered.

Gordon also said the cold weather can also affect our body physically. If you are feeling any sort of discomfort, seek medical attention.

"Sometimes I'll have patients when they come in the office, maybe on a Monday after they experienced some concerning symptoms over the weekend, and they thought, 'Well I wasn't sure, it was just my stomach but I've never really felt that effort.' When in doubt even if you do not have underlying heart disease, high blood pressure, history of strokes, diabetes, high cholesterol, we still want you to seek evaluation," Gordon said.

It's important to stay hydrated with water and to avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as they will sap heat away from the body.

If you must be outside in these extreme cold conditions, double check to make sure you're staying warm and healthy.
