Nate Tice & Matt Harmon break down what the Pittsburgh Steelers need to accomplish in free agency and the draft this spring and what holes on the roster desperately need filling. First and foremost: they need an answer at quarterback. Despite making the playoffs in 2024, signal caller is a huge question mark for the Steel Curtain. With Russell Wilson likely out of the picture in Pittsburgh, will the Steelers ride with Justin Fields, make an aggressive trade for Matthew Stafford or go in a different direction altogether?
Pittsburgh Steelers, Matt, team needs, where are your eyes going next few months with Pittsburgh?
Uh, quarterback, receiver, outside corner across from Joey Porter, uh, because that was a problem spot basically all season.
They played their top 10 in man coverage, their top 10 in single high.
You can't do that with, um, a real problem area at cornerback.
Um, but specifically on the offense, yeah, obviously they got to figure out what they're doing with the quarterback.
If they're gonna truly do like, all right, we're just gonna do a whole year of Justin Fields, as you said earlier, it seems like maybe that's where we're headed.
I'm not the biggest fields guy in the world.
There are people, but I, I don't hate the plan, um, mostly because like, what else are you gonna do?
This is the, this is the only team that I think if they traded for Stafford, I would get it for both parties, um, because they, they're one of the few teams that Went to the playoffs, but has a huge need at quarterback.
So I think if they went for Stafford, um, that would make sense.
It would also make sense for Stafford against you're going to a guy that you're going to a team that is a contender instead of like, well, yeah, OK, Matthew Stafford's a giant now.
Well, OK, we got a lot of, we got a lot more like boxes to check here before we're just penciling the damn Giants into the NFC champion.
Um, not that I think that Steelers are going to the AFC championship.
Otherwise, yeah, you're probably in the, are we the Jackson Dart team in the late first round.
I don't really probably want to be that team.
Um, so if you're bringing back fields, then I think the needed receiver becomes paramount because I think you can, what you can't do is do the fields thing again and have him working with The like the worst receiver core outside of George Pickens, uh, that you could possibly assemble, and Pickens isn't a guy that you can count on either, so they definitely then need to think, I think take multiple swings at wide out, both like from a free agent standpoint and a draft pick standpoint cause they have a good, um, they have a good tight end, Pat Fryermuth.
They probably also need a new back.
I, I just don't think Naji Harris is a is a is a starting back.
Uh, I think he's part of, part of a committee, but the like back that they want on Arthur Smith's offense, so I, I don't think he really fits with that.
Offensive line is good.
If you're gonna, if you're gonna have fields though, I think you got to surround him with a lot of pass catchers.
Yeah, I, I think if they were saying, OK, we're bringing fields back because we're pushing this year in 2025 and hopefully he's a dice roll that hits for us and oh my God, we just hit point after point here.
Like you need a back then to just create a backfield that's just like dangerous and just say like, hey, we're big plays in the backfield and we have a good old line, a good run game, like with the quarterback and try and stop us a little bit, kind of like.
A little bit with the Broncos did this year, but maybe a more souped up version of that on offense and then have that defense peak, um, but you know, Broncos lost in the wild card game, so hopefully you get a little bit more than that.
But I, yeah, secondary receiver, a second receiver, I should say, they don't take receivers early usually or in the 1st round, but I mean, Abuca is a guy I love for them, um, from Ohio State.
Makes sense draft wise where they're taking yada yada yada, but I feel like if they did go down that path, um, yeah, but I think the cleanest path for them is staying with fields.
