BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB) - Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has officially called the State Legislature to an extraordinary session to consider the election code, dates, deadlines, and plans for the 2026 election cycle. The session will be held at the State Capitol from October 23-November 13, starting at 2 p.m. on Oct. 23.
This comes amid oral arguments held on Oct. 15 at the U.S. Supreme Court, in regard to Louisiana's Congressional Maps under the 'Louisiana V Callais' case. Justices have asked the question to both parties: "whether the state's intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the 14th or 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution." It's a case that could have major implications for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
"Our legislature has, in good faith, tried to comply, not just this time or the last time, but for decades," said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. "So they are the ones that have to struggle with making sense out of some very vague terms and very vague tests that have been created that just ensure that we are going to be bogged down in litigation. No matter what we do, we are damned if we do, we are damned if we don't, and that's what our case illustrates."
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
