A Brooklyn man was charged with robbery, assault, and grand larceny for allegedly attempting to steal two vehicles earlier this week in an incident that ended with an NYPD officer being shot by a fellow officer, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said that in separate incidents on Friday morning, 28-year-old Kevin Dubuisson attempted to carjack multiple people and assaulted a driver.
"This defendant brought chaos to a quiet Queens neighborhood," said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, in a press release. Prosecutors allege that Dubuisson's actions also led to a detective being shot by another officer.
Dubuisson faces nearly 32 years in prison if convicted of the dozen charges he faces. An attorney for Dubuisson couldn't be reached for comment.
The incidents occurred within minutes of each other starting at 8:40 a.m. Friday when Dubuisson allegedly attempted to steal a white Hyundai Santa Fe at a gas station on Parsons Boulevard in Whitestone, getting into the driver's seat while the engine was running. Prosecutors said he then got into a physical struggle with an employee who stopped him and simulated grabbing what appeared to be a firearm. He then threatened to kill a woman across the street, again making a similar gesture.
Minutes later at the intersection of 2nd Road and Whitestone Expressway Service Road, Dubuisson attempted to carjack a black Toyota Highlander from a man while holding what appeared to be a metal hook. The driver ran from the car, but Dubuisson chased him down, demanding the vehicle's key. Then, driving the Toyota, Dubuisson allegedly backed into another vehicle, injuring a woman and her elderly mother.
Prosecutors said a plain-clothed but on-duty Detective Corey Fisher came across the scene, watching as Dubuisson slammed into the woman's vehicle. Fisher then placed his own car in front of the Toyota Dubuisson was driving, and Dubuisson drove into its side.
That's when uniformed police officers arrived and approached the Toyota with their guns drawn. According to Katz, Fisher then heard several gun shots from the vicinity of those officers, and was struck in his right hand and left leg. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for two gunshot wounds and a broken leg. Prosecutors did not elaborate on who the officers were aiming at, what caused them to fire, or why their bullets hit Fisher.
"Make no mistake, this defendant's alleged actions set into motion the events that led to Detective Corey Fisher's hospitalization," Katz said. "I wish Detective Fisher well as he recuperates from his injuries."
Dubuisson was taken into custody at the scene. The NYPD said Friday he was not injured in the shooting and did not have a gun on him.
