The Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it had net income of 30 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 23 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 8 cents per share.

The medical professional liability insurer posted revenue of $290.4 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $278.5 million, which also beat Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $273.6 million.
