TEXARKANA, Texas - October is Physical Therapy Awareness Month, and CHRISTUS St. Michael Rehab Hospital celebrates with a heartwarming story about a 100-year-old Texarkana man who received the benefits of physical therapy.
Leonard Sneed admitted he was sedentary most of the time, and when he stood up from his chair, he fell and broke his hip, requiring surgery.
Physical Therapist Patrick Hulan helped Sneed during his stay at rehab. Hulan said he was a fascinating patient, and the staff found out that during his stay in rehab, he would be turning 100 years old.
Sneed went from inactivity to a very active man thanks to physical therapy. His bucket list goal is to visit the Grand Canyon with his son next summer.
Rehab Inpatient Supervisor Chrissy Rabideau said that physical therapy, in a nutshell, is using movement to transform lives.
"Physical therapy is a medical profession that uses movement, and honestly relationship building with the patient and getting to know what the patient's preference is and what it is that they love to do to and help getting them back to what it is they do," said Rabideau. "So exercise, but also overall strengthening, and getting them back to what they love to do."
One in four adults falls each year, and nearly 37% of those falls result in injuries requiring medical treatment or activity restriction, according to CHRISTUS Health.
