LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A Lubbock mother credits one late night Google search with saving her son's life.
6-year-old Witten Daniel was hospitalized earlier this year after developing severe complications from what doctors initially thought was the flu. Within hours, he lost the ability to walk, talk, and even breathe on his own.
His mother, Casey Daniel, said local doctors eventually diagnosed Witten with a cavernoma, a rare cluster of blood vessels that had started bleeding in his brainstem. She was told there was little more they could do.
"There are no words to describe how horrifying it is to see your child in that kind of condition," Casey said.
Refusing to accept that answer, Casey began researching treatment options on her phone. That search led her to Dr.Jacques Morcos, a neurosurgeon at UTHealth Houston who specializes in cavernomas.
"I looked at the images and I thought this can be done. I said let's transfer you here," Dr. Morcos said.
Within days, Witten flew to Houston for a risky surgery, performed by Dr. Morcos and pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Manish Shah. The operation lasted four hours and was a success.
"I want to say thank you for Dr. Morcos and Dr.Shah for letting me see my friends again," Witten said.
Now seven, Witten is back home in Lubbock, celebrating his birthday, starting second grade and returning to the baseball field.
