Assam: Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation office vandalized

Dibrugarh: The office of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) Mayor, Saikat Patra, in upper Assam was allegedly vandalized by on Monday evening while he was out of station.

DMC Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukan has been accused of breaking the door lock and the glass tabletop in the Mayor's room.

The incident occurred while Mayor Patra and the DMC Commissioner were in Delhi for the National Urban Conclave on November 8 and 9.

Mayor Saikat Patra confirmed the incident, stating he was in Delhi attending the National Urban Conclave on November 8 and 9 with the DMC Commissioner.

"In my absence, an incident happened in my room," Dr. Patra told reporters. "I heard that the Deputy Mayor broke my glass table and my door's lock. This should not have happened because everything should be solved through dialogue, not with violence."

The Mayor lamented that such an act "defames the decade-long history of DMC," which is one of Assam's oldest civic bodies.

He also suggested a possible motive, mentioning that the Deputy Mayor's name was not included in a tender committee formed for the renovation of an old room the Mayor previously used.

Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukan, however, refuted the allegations. He stated that he had been in the Mayor's room because he currently has no allotted office in the corporation building.

"I have no room, that is why we had a discussion in the DMC Mayor's room because he was not in Dibrugarh," Phukan said. "This was not a big issue. We have many works to do."

Sources within the DMC confirm that the Deputy Mayor has no dedicated office, having reportedly relinquished his room for the newly joined DMC Commissioner.

The Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB), originally established in 1873, was upgraded to the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) in 2024.
