Rutgers Athletic Director Pat Hobbs Resigns

Rutgers got some unexpected news this past weekend with the development that athletic director Pat Hobbs had abruptly resigned from his position. Hobbs had held the position for the past eight years, which was the longest of any active athletic director in the league before his resignation.

Hobbs claimed that he was leaving the university due to health concerns.

"After meeting with my cardiac team this week and having just been apprised of the results of my latest round of testing it is clear that I can not continue to serve as Athletic Director given the requirements of the position," Hobbs stated. "I recognize this is not the ideal timeframe to depart, however other factors need to take precedence."

While health concerns are certainly a valid reason, the abrupt nature of his resignation in what was essentially an end of the week news dump has struck many as odd. Especially in comparison to other coaches from the university that got a much bigger rollout to announce their departure. It also doesn't help that a number of people within the Rutgers program were effectively blindsided by the news and neither basketball coach Steve Pikiell or football coach Greg Schiano had any comments at the time of the release.

With the loss of Hobbs the Scarlet Knights will have deputy athletic director and chief of staff Ryan Pisarri take over the role on an interim basis.
