New Muskegon coffee shop features fresh paninis, artisan desserts

MUSKEGON, MI - Five food vendors surround a centerpiece bar on the first floor of the historic Lumberman's Bank building.

One of those offerings includes The Press, a new coffee and sandwich shop that opened inside Lumberman's Vault in downtown Muskegon.

Sonny Lam and Mary Ngyuen opened the eatery at 221 W Webster Ave. in late January to offer locals and visitors a laid-back, homey atmosphere with tasty sandwiches and fresh brews.

The pair opened the shop as a sister concept to their first business, UpLeaf, which has two locations in Holland and Muskegon.

"I've always had a passion for coffee," Lam said. "Growing up in Southeast Asia, the smell of robusta beans was part of everyday life. Robusta has nearly double the caffeine and half the sugar of arabica, but it's rarely given the spotlight. My goal is to change that -- to create and showcase unique drinks that bring out the best in robusta, right here in Muskegon."

He told MLive that he and his wife chose the space in downtown Muskegon because of how refreshing the food collective idea is at Lumberman's Vault.

The two-story former bank vault reopened to the public last year, drawing packed crowds eager to try out the diverse collection of eateries, from Mexican and Vietnamese cuisine to soul food and American classics.

"Every individual store front is quite literally pushing for the same goal, which is ultimate hospitality," Lam said. "We are very lucky to have our neighbors here at The Vault. The space itself is absolutely remarkable."

For first-time guests, he shared that he always recommends a traditional Vietnamese iced coffee for $5.65.

It features a double shot of robusta coffee shaken with creamy condensed milk.

Follow the refreshing drink up with a panini press sandwich. A top favorite is The Daily Press for $9.99.

It comes with your choice of sliced ham or turkey, baby spinach, roasted red peppers, provolone cheese, and house aioli on sourdough bread.

If that's not enough, The Press offers plenty of desserts like their homemade croffles; a mix between a croissant and a waffle.

There are four options: buttery and crispy old fashion, caramel Nutella, fruity pebble, or cinnamon. Prices range from $5-$6.85.

Lam touts that the new cafe stands out because of its specialty and original creations, especially the crafted drinks.

He said that he believes in the energy of the city and is ready to offer more to the area.

"Downtown Muskegon has a growing, vibrant community, and we wanted to be part of that momentum -- supporting local businesses and serving locals and visitors alike," Lam said.

The hours of operation for The Press are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
