Bangladesh Presses India for Sheikh Hasina Extradition After Landmark Verdict

Bangladesh is formally seeking the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. The request follows a death sentence issued against her by a special tribunal in Dhaka. This development tests the diplomatic ties between the two neighboring nations. The interim government confirmed it expects a swift response from New Delhi. Officials stress the judicial process is now complete, making her return a legal priority.

Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, addressed the delicate situation. He stated that bilateral relations should not be defined by this single issue alone. However, he confirmed Bangladesh expects her repatriation at the "earliest possible time."According to Reuters, Sheikh Hasina was sentenced in absentia for crimes against humanity. The charges relate to her government's crackdown on student-led protests last year. The unrest ultimately led to the toppling of her Awami League regime in August 2024.

Adviser Hossain expressed optimism for future relations. He suggested India needs time to adjust to the new political realities in Bangladesh. The goal remains building better working relations based on mutual interest. The government has already sent an official letter through diplomatic channels. This action utilizes the existing extradition treaty between the two countries. Bangladesh is also considering other international legal avenues, like the ICC, to secure the return of fugitive convicts.
