Football charity group installs 68th defibrillator into the community at 4 Kingdoms

After Neil Humphries' dad died of a brain tumour in 2012, Neil set up The Big Match, a football match to raise money for Action for Children and The Brain Tumour Charity.

Since 2012, the team has raised more than £1m for different causes, including installing defibrillators after a friend lost her little girl due to heart conditions.

Neil said: "The Big Match has been going since 2012, it has done wonderful things since then.

"We wanted to raise money for defibrillators in communities. We started off wanting to raise money for about 10, and we've done 68 so far."

An annual charity cricket match at Silchester Sports Pavilion raised money for the defibrillator campaign, giving The Big Match enough to buy three more defibrillators, with one being installed at 4 Kingdoms, in Headley.

Neil said: "We thought it was the perfect place to go and put one, especially on the back of the fact that they do loads throughout the year.

"I went along and met the team. [I was] a little bit blown away by the amount of work they do throughout the year, which goes under the radar. Huge thanks to those guys for what they do, and what goes around comes around."

4 Kingdoms supports causes and groups, inviting them to the park for days out, and is home to The Blue Lighthouse ED, an alternative education provision for young people who struggle in mainstream education.

The Big Match also holds football coaching sessions, gala dinners, silent auctions, celebrity golf days, and sponsors grassroots football teams.

Neil said: "We've also raised lots of money to help people who need to fund cancer treatments or special mobility equipment for children with mobility needs. We've also raised money for eye-gaze equipment Saxon Wood School.

"It barely scratching the surface of what we've done."

The team is planning the next Big Match at Southampton stadium in May 2026. Get in touch to play on social media @thebigmatch or email [email protected].
