The Coimbatore Corporation is set to begin works on a 'She Toilet' facility at the Vadavalli bus stand, aimed at providing dedicated amenities for women travellers.
Opened to the public in 2018, the Vadavalli bus stand was built on 48 cents of land at a cost of ₹2.25 crore. The bus stand operates on 11 routes, connecting destinations such as Gandhipuram, Marudhamalai, Thondamuthur, Singanallur, and Ondipudur.
The project is the first such initiative in Coimbatore to offer dedicated facilities for women at a bus stand.
The ₹65-lakh facility will include toilets, a nursing room for mothers, a diaper-changing space for children, a security room, lockers, a sanitary napkin vending unit, and a small reading or study area furnished with seating and tables. A barrier-free entrance will ensure accessibility for all users.
Spanning approximately 2,000 sq. ft., the surrounding space will be landscaped with plants and creepers to improve air quality and provide a calm environment for visitors.
The foundation stone for the project was laid recently by Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, and Mayor K. Ranganayaki.
According to an engineering official, the works are expected to be completed within four months. Once operational, the council will decide whether the facility will be free to use or managed as a paid service.
