US State Department approves USD 780 mln Javelin missile sale to Poland

The US State Department has approved the potential sale of over 2,500 Javelin anti-tank missiles and related logistical equipment to Poland for a total value of USD 780 million, the Pentagon reported on Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) decision on the X platform.

"More Javelins for the Polish Armed Forces! The US State Department has approved the sale to Poland of 253 launchers and more than 2,500 missiles, along with essential training and a stock of spare parts," he wrote. "The Javelin is a guided anti-tank missile already in service with the Territorial Defence Forces."

This marks another acquisition of Javelins by Poland. The first contract was signed in 2020 for 60 launchers and 180 missiles worth USD 54 million. In 2023, an annexe was made for an additional 500 missiles and 50 launchers valued at USD 103.5 million.

Produced by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, the Javelin can be operated by a single soldier and has a range of up to 4 kilometres. It gained significant recognition during the early stages of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, when it proved highly effective against Russian armoured and mechanised units. (PAP)
