Janet Jackson is has a lot to celebrate at the AMAs. The 59-year-old singer was honored with the Icon Award at the 2025 American Music Awards. She marked the distinction by delivering her first televised performance since 2018.
The Icon Award is bestowed upon an artist whose music has had undeniable cultural and global influence over the music industry. That certainly rings true for Jackson, who has had immense success over her five decades in the industry.
That was most recently seen with the recent viral craze on social media of her Billboard 100 dance track, "Someone To Call My Lover," which catapulted the song back on the Billboard charts, nearly 24 years after its original release.
The track reached No. 3 on the R&B Digital Songs chart. It also achieved a 1,400 percent gain in year-to-date U.S. on-demand streams.
Throughout her career, Jackson has sold more than 180 million records worldwide. She's won five GRAMMYs, two Emmys, and a Golden Globe. Jackson has also been nominated for an Academy Award and nabbed dozens of American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards.
Jackson isn't going to slow down after the AMAs. She recently kicked off another leg of her Las Vegas residency, JANET JACKSON: LAS VEGAS, which will run through May 31.
Hosted by Jennifer Lopez, the AMAs returned in a big way following a two-year hiatus. In addition to Jackson, performers include Benson Boone, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, and Lopez herself.
The AMAs are the world's largest fan-voted award show honoring today's most influential artists and their passionate fanbases.
This year, Kendrick Lamar leads the nominees with 10 nods. Post Malone is close behind with eight nominations. Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Shaboozey each earned seven nods a piece.
The 2025 American Music Awards will air live coast to coast on Monday, May 26 at 8:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM PT on the CBS Television Network, and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.
