CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state high school football playoffs in West Virginia get started this weekend after a one week delay over court challenges. The delay will postpone the state championship matchups by a week as well.
The city of Charleston is preparing to host those games for the first time three decades. Fortunately, Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Tim Brady said the delay has not negatively impacted plans for the Capital City to showcase itself for football fans from across the state.
"We're 100 percent on track. The good news is with just a one week delay, everything we had planned translates to the following week," said Brady.
The championship games will now be December 13 and 14. They also coincide with the state cheerleading championships to be held at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Brady said the conflict there isn't one which will impact the city, but it might impact schools.
"Cheer squads may have teams playing in the championship game and competing for a cheer championship at the Coliseum, but as far as manpower goes, we're A-Okay there," he explained.
Brady said they have also worked closely with the athletic administration at the University of Charleston and foresee no conflicts with the Golden Eagles who are expected to compete in the post season playoffs as well.
"The toughest part about the delay for us here in Charleston is that we're excited to host these games and it's pushed everything back a week. We've got some great things planned and the only thing the delay did was delay the fun we're going to have in Charleston," he said.
