NFL star Daniel Jones given huge Giants responsibility for sixth-straight season

DANIEL Jones has been given a huge vote of confidence from his teammates prior to the new NFL season.

The New York Giants quarterback has again been named a team captain for the 2024 campaign.

Jones signed a huge four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants last year.

It came after the 27-year-old led Big Blue to the NFL playoffs in 2022 and posted career numbers on the season.

Last year however was a disaster for both Jones and the Giants, with the starter hampered by injury.

He threw just 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions through six games, going 1-5 before suffering a torn ACL in his right knee.

Despite speculation that the Giants could move on from the former first-round pick, Jones is ready to lead their 2024 challenge.

He was named alongside four teammates as a captain for the new season.

It marks the sixth straight year Jones has been nominated by his peers for the role.

"This year there are less captains, so I think that holds a little bit more weight," Giants linebacker Andrew Thomas, a fellow captain, explained.

"Guys respect you a lot more.

"We brought a lot of other veteran guys along, even if they're not captains, that have done a good job on both sides of the ball, just being leaders and trying to get everybody on the same page."

Alongside Jones and Thomas, Dexter Larence, Bobby Okereke, and Caery Kreiter will wear a C patch this year.

The Giants named ten captains last year, but have decided to shrink that by half for 2024.

"I think the best fit for our team this year was five captains," Okereke added.

"Great guys who have different leadership styles, different experiences, and wisdom, and I think we'll do a great job."

Jones is entering his sixth year at MetLife after being selected as the No.6 overall pick in the 2019 Draft.

The former Duke play-caller has started 59 games since draft night over five years ago.

He has an NFL career record of 22-36-1, along with 12,512 passing yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions.

Jones hopes to emulate his impressive 2022 campaign on the ground in the upcoming season.

He rushed for 708 yards two years ago, adding an impressive seven rushing touchdowns.

Jones and the Giants begin the new season on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
