Couple on way to completing epic 1,500km bike ride in just eight days for MS Society

A couple are approaching the end of a mammoth 1,500km bike ride from Land's End to John O'Groats in just eight days to raise funds for the MS Society.

Lydia Beeken, 30, a former Polam Hall School student from Gilling West, near Richmond, and her partner Alex Travis, 27, are seven days into their challenge and have already raised nearly £4,000.

Their aim is to raise as much as possible for the MS charity. Lydia was inspired to attempt the challenge after her dad, Barrie Beeken, was diagnosed with the condition two years ago.

The MS Society supports people with multiple sclerosis, a condition which affects your central nervous system.

Lydia said: "Most people do the ride in about 11 to 15 days but we're doing it in eight - it has been really tough but we're taking it 10km at a time.

"The weather has been the worst thing. We've had rain, wind, even sleet! We are averaging around 185km a day. I can't say which part has been the hardest, it's all been hard! But we manage to keep smiling.

Alex added: "It's all down to what café we find every day. We need to make sure we don't get to one which closes early!"

Lydia, who works in pharmaceuticals, said this is the toughest challenge she's ever done - and this is despite completing her first Ironman in Frankfurt in June, which she completed in 11 hours and 20 minutes.

She said: "I do have a good level of fitness due to training for the Ironman, but this has been so tough. We couldn't do it without my mum, Vanessa, being our support crew! She's been driving us to our accommodation every night from our finish point, which sometimes has worked out bring half an hour's drive back the way we came!

"We're so grateful for all the donations we've had so far, but would love to raise as much for this amazing charity as we can to help people with multiple sclerosis."

Lydia has also recently lost her grandfather, Frank Gibbon, who rose to fame earlier this year as the 'care home influencer' as he gained legions of online fans for his antics in dressing up as various characters from his care home in Scorton.

Despite the weather and the pain in their legs day after day, the pair - who met at a cycling club - said that as well as the support they are receiving, the beauty of the landscape gives them a boost along the way.

Lydia said: "We take it in turn to have little wobbles, but in the Lake District the views were so stunning it helped us finish the day feeling positive."
