KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - While there were some ups and downs during the Tennessee game against Georgia on Saturday, there were also some special moments.
One of those special moments included Gaylon Wilson, a World War II veteran who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
"They drafted me, and I volunteered 4 times, but it was for the Navy," Wilson said.
On top of being a veteran, Wilson is also the oldest living VFL. He played for the Orange Bowl team in 1947 under General Neyland himself.
"He didn't talk to you like he was a big general or the coach. He talked to you right on your level, and I talked to him several times. I thought the world of him," Wilson said.
Wilson was welcomed back to what is now Neyland Stadium on Saturday and said the crowds of today are much different than what they used to be.
"I went to school there and played ball, but I had never seen a crowd like that," Wilson said. "I had never seen that many people anywhere. Boy, they turned out didn't they."
Wilson received a standing ovation during the game. The smile on his face said it all.
"I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really did," Wilson said.
Wilson met several dignitaries at the game, including UT President Randy Boyd. He said he didn't know who Boyd was in the moment but would've loves to talk to him.
