Fugees Family starts "freedom fund" to cover immigration case fees - WNKY News 40 Television

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Fugees Family is a non-profit that supports immigrant and refugee families through education. Right now, they are raising money to further assist their families.

Early on in the second Trump administration, the organization started to plan for a legal fund, knowing that it would be possible someone connected to the organization could face legal trouble. In June 2025, Ernesto Manuel Andres - who had just graduated from the Teranga Academy, a school born out of partnership between Fugees and Bowling Green Independent Schools - fell into ICE custody.

It took around 3 weeks to bring Ernesto home, during which he was moved to 3 different locations. Luma Mufleh, founder and CEO of Fugees said many detentions like Ernesto's are people that don't have any criminal record and with the costs associated with attorneys and other fees incurred to fighting through the legal system, this is a proactive step toward potentially more families being impacted by ICE operations.
