SPRINGDALE -- One of two remaining locations of a once prominent Southern restaurant chain has closed.
The Shoney's restaurant on Airport Boulevard in Springdale will no longer serve its signature breakfast buffet or dinner offerings, according to signage posted on the building.
"Closed -- Thanks for a great 35 years," the restaurant's roadside sign read as of Aug. 8.
Shoney's-branded signage on the restaurant building itself had been removed. The Springdale location no longer appeared on the chain's website.
It's unclear when the restaurant had officially closed its doors, but posts from local residents on social media indicated the location had been closed around the last week of July.
Six locations remain open in the state, including one on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, according to the chain's website. Other South Carolina locations can still be found in Florence, Hartsville, Manning, Myrtle Beach and Sumter.
Around 50 Shoney's are still in operation around the country, down from hundreds at the chain's peak in the 1990s.
The former Springdale location sits across Airport Boulevard from a new Sonic Drive-In which opened in July. The area is marked by multiple hotels near Columbia Metropolitan Airport and Interstate 26.
The area is poised to get a new Fairfield Inn, despite concerns from neighborhood residents and elected officials.
The Airport Boulevard corridor has long been sighted for redevelopment, with local leaders maintaining the area is a lackluster first impression for visitors entering the region from the airport.
