Vigor boys and girls basketball gear up for final four

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Vigor High School will be well represented in Birmingham this week with both the boys' and girls' teams headed to the final four. The girls are hoping to bring home their first blue map trophy since 1989, and the boys are looking for their first state title in program history. First, they'll have to make it through this semi-final round.

The Wolves hit the court one final time today in Prichard before they hit the road to Birmingham tomorrow morning. The girls will meet Scottsboro on Wednesday and head coach Andrea Powell tells me the Wildcats are a shooting team, which is why her girls have been focused on their defensive play.

In order to be successful in this game, coach Powell says she's expecting every player to step up and do their job. It's been a long time since this program has won a state title and the Wolves are looking forward to the opportunity to make some history.

As for the boys, they'll be facing Guntersville on Wednesday. Vigor head coach Lee Riley has led the Wolves to a final four appearance in his first season leading the program.

Riley tells me, the keys to winning this match up will be: playing their game, making sure they stick to what got them to this point which is tough defense, a lot of ball pressure, and taking care of the basketball. The Wolves had a great final day of practice here at home.

Lee says, bringing home a blue map trophy would mean everything, because of all the hard work they've put in this season.

Tip off between the Vigor girls and Scottsboro is set for 3PM on Wednesday in Birmingham. The Vigor boys tip off with Guntersville on Wednesday at 4:30PM.
