Facebook Messenger Now Supports HD Video Calls, AI Backgrounds, and More

Meta is improving the calling experience on Facebook Messenger with some top-requested features from users. The main additions include HD video calls and AI backgrounds, which will leverage the existing Meta AI integration in Messenger for creating custom themes for chat conversations.

"Around the world, people collectively spend over 7 billion minutes on calls across Facebook and Messenger every day, and we're constantly working on new ways to enhance the experience. That's why today, we're announcing new Messenger Calling features, many of which are some of our most requested," the Facebook Messenger team said.

HD video calls will be enabled by default when users are on a Wi-Fi connection, but there will be an in-app for enabling HD video on a cellular connection. If background noise suppression and voice isolation won't be enabled by default, users will be able to turn them on in call settings.

Facebook Messenger will also let users send audio or video messages when their friends don't pick up a call. A "Record message" button will appear on the call screen and to send an audio or video message to the chat conversation.

Lastly, iPhone users can now enjoy hands-free calling and messaging via Siri. With simple voice commands, the digital assistant will be able to call or send a message to any Messenger contact.
