SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - One Summerville High School dance teacher is looking for her students to be as focused while they complete assignments as they are when they dance.
When Lauren Kogan's students aren't doing choreography, they are sitting on the studio floor learning.
"When we do any kind of vocabulary assignment or PowerPoint presentation, the students are just sitting on the floor" Kogan says. "Most of them are OK with that, but it's nice to have an option where you're sitting for an extended period of time that you have some comfort."
With no chairs in the classroom because of the amount of space and movement they require, Kogan says the solution is foldable floor chairs, so her room can easily and quickly be rearranged from dance studio to classroom.
"Chairs will take up a lot of space. I also have never been a fan of keeping chairs in my room, because then dancers, when they're tired, want to sit," Kogan says. "And obviously we like to have a water break, but we only have so much time together, so I don't want them sitting and losing their stamina as they're performing in class."
Not only is using the studio floor to read and write uncomfortable, but it can be a distraction as well.
"Students might be laying down, or students might be sitting up or laying on against the wall, but it'd be good to have them all organized when I do those activities so that I can see everybody," Kogan says.
That's why she's looking to create an environment where her students can be just as engaged off the dance floor as they are on the dance floor.
"If they're not comfortable, they can't learn their best," Kogan says.
