A new report in Lowpass claims that Sonos has partnered with a company called The Trade Desk to create its Apple TV alternative. The device runs on AOSP, the open source version of Android, and it was supposed to ship during the coming holiday season. But thanks to the setbacks Sonos has experienced with its new mobile app, the TV streamer has been delayed until early 2025.

We first learned of the Sonos plans for a living room set-top box in late 2023 when Bloomberg revealed the company's plans to dramatically expand its product offerings this year. Among the many new offerings would be a pair of premium headphones, which Sonos finally launched in May, and the set-top box, which is code-named Pinewood. According to Bloomberg, the Sonos streamer would cost $150 to $200, run Android-based apps, support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision spatial audio and HDR video capabilities, and offer voice control. The firm also planned a Sonos-branded video service of some kind.

The Lowpass report expands on that information, noting that The Trade Desk has been working on an Android-based smart TV platform for five years and that Sonos is its first hardware partner. Sonos is using the core Trade Desk smart TV OS, customizing the user interface, and working with software partners on apps. Using Android is key because crucial services like Netflix and Disney+ won't have to do much work to support the box.

The new report also claims that Sonos has delayed the release of this device until the first quarter of 2025. Bloomberg separately confirmed this new schedule, noting that the ongoing issues fixing its new app-which I refer to as Sonosgate-have devastated the small company: It's delayed other products, laid off employees, and will lose millions of dollars as a direct result of these problems. Bloomberg pegs the new release date as March.
