Wayne County man arrested on burglary charges while on medical furlough from jail

WAYNE COUNTY, Ind. -- A Wayne County man has been arrested after he reportedly broke into a home on Sunday morning while he was on medical furlough from jail, according to officials with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

According to a news release from the office, deputies with the office responded to a residential alarm in the 4000 block of U.S. 27 at around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. When deputies arrived, they reportedly found an open door with pry marks on it.

Before they entered the home, they reportedly heard a noise inside and saw a man, later identified as Robert Bragg, exiting the basement of the home. Bragg was reportedly carrying items from the residence.

When deputies identified themselves, Bragg reportedly ran from the home. The release said that deputies successfully apprehended Bragg "after a brief foot pursuit."

After an initial investigation, officials learned that Bragg was released from a jail in Miami County, Ohio on Thursday for a medical furlough. The release said that Bragg had active warrants in Wayne County for battery, battery resulting in bodily injury and two counts of burglary.

"Our deputies acted quickly and effectively to apprehend the suspect, ensuring the safety of our community and preventing further loss," Wayne County Sheriff Randy Retter said in the release. "This incident underscores the commitment of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to safeguard our community."

Bragg was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary, a Level 4 felony, and one misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement, the release said.
