BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) -- If you find a stray cat out in the cold, you may feel inclined to help out, which the Broome County Humane Society said is wonderful, but it's important to have a plan in place when caring for new furry friends.
"First and foremost, have a plan. A lot of people will call or they will inquire about stray cats that they see, and you know, they take them in and can't take care of them. So, developing a plan of if you catch a stray, where you gonna go?" said shelter manager Amberly Ondria.
Once you have a plan in place to take in a stray cat, check to see if the cat is friendly or if it seems scared.
"Some of the things that people can check in to see is if you point your finger to the cat, is it going to boop the nose. If you pick up the cat, can you carry it 30 ft without it trying to squirm away from you? and just overall body language," said Ondria.
Make cats more comfortable with a warm and cozy shelter, and provide them with fresh food and water.
Ondria said the shelter hosts vaccine clinics every month and urges pet owners to get their pets spayed and neutered to help control the pet population.
To adopt a feline friend, visit the Broome County Humane Society for cats that have been vetted and checked. Adoptions help with the Humane Society's kitten population.
