Florida Education Commissioner blasts Darryl Jones over comments on Charlie Kirk

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The Florida education commissioner blasted a Leon County school board member for his comments on Charlie Kirk.

Anastasios Kamoutsas spoke at Tuesday night's board meeting and asked the board to hold Darryl Jones accountable.

"Board member Darryl Jones has shown a disturbing willingness to engage in political theater to appease political fanatics and has encouraged teachers in Leon County to do the same," Kamoutsas said.

We reported last month that Jones called Charlie Kirk a quote "racist, misogynist, homophobic klansman."

He posted that comment on social media after Kirk's murder.

He also criticized Kamoutsas for condemning anyone who commented on the murder.

Many residents spoke out about Jones' comment at last night's school board meeting -

Some slammed him while others supported his right to free speech.

Tallahassee resident Juanda Beck Jones said he had a right to make those comments.

"I like what he had to say. I agree with what he had to say. But everybody might not agree with him. But he had the right to say it."

Board chair Laurie Lawson Cox acknowledged free speech rights, but she also said elected officials must be careful that what they say is true and not divisive.
