Texas Tech football debuts 100-year throwback uniforms vs Kansas

The Texas Tech football program's first game took place on Oct. 3, 1925, when Tech and McMurry battled to a scoreless tie.

Tech is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its football program by wearing a first-time throwback uniform on Saturday, Oct. 11, against Kansas, this year's homecoming game.

The Red Raiders' helmets, jerseys, socks, and shoes are black. The jersey numbers and pants are white, and the Double T on the helmets and other accents are scarlet.

"I think it looks incredible," Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said in a pre-game interview on the Tech radio network.

The uniform, designed by adidas, took elements from different eras throughout Tech football history. Among them are the 1925 "TECH" word mark from the first season, the first Double T from 1926, and traction stripes on the shoulders from 1930; the latter, according to Tech research, was considered a cutting-edge feature at the time. The numbers and numeral style on the front of the jersey originated in 1935.

The scarlet-and-black stripes down the side of the pants were inspired by the Masked Rider and the horse's breast collar from the mid-1960s. Stars on the helmet come from 1970, when Jim Carlen added that element in his first year as the Red Raiders' head coach.
