Dylan Kingston's arm, legs lead Selah in shutout Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG -- A lot can change in a year for a high school football team.

Especially under a second-year head coach with a senior quarterback building some belief in himself and the offense.

That was on display on a hazy Friday night at Ellensburg as Dylan Kingston led a surging Selah squad to a 42-0 victory over the Bulldogs as it improved to 2-0 in CWAC play.

Kingston was part of a QB tandem last year as the Vikings survived a 7-3 slobberknocker against their rival on the other end of the canyon in Greg Haste's second game leading the program. Kingston and Colton Shea combined to throw for 74 yards in that game within an offense that scored more than 21 points twice and was focused on pounding the rock.

This year -- thanks in part to an high-arcing 53-yard scoring connection with Hayden Nelson-Hawkins to cap Selah's first drive -- Kingston eclipsed last matchup's yardage mark on the seventh play from scrimmage before running in a score for the second week in a row.

"The growth overall is phenomenal," Haste, who went 5-5 in the first season, said. "That's what we've talked about in the summer and in the spring, how much we progressed last year, and that we have to be even better this year and make the big jump."

For Kingston, who roams center field for Selah's powerhouse baseball team, offseason work nearly 'every day' with his receivers and a quick start to the season that's featured two wins by a combined 46-0 has been a momentum builder.

"I think it's a really big confidence boost, not just for me, but for everyone on the team," Kingston said. "I think we look like a completely different team."

Kingston spread the ball around, connecting with Logan Martin and Jaxon Benge for his sixth and seventh touchdown passes of the young season.

"He's playing with confidence and poise," Haste said. "He's reading a few different guys each play, and he's got a big arm and can throw it to different guys."

Little was asked of starting running back Calen Wuitschick, who displayed exceptional quickness in bouncing an inside run to the edge to score on one of his three carries. He made an impact on defense as well, grabbing one of four interceptions thrown by the Bulldogs.

Turnovers made it difficult for Ellensburg to move the ball with any consistency, especially in the first half when six consecutive drives ended in a turnover on downs, a fumble or interception -- including a 55-yard pick-six by Cody Trenkenschuh on a screen pass.

"I was supposed to run on a blitz," he said, "but I studied all day for those screens, and I just saw it coming."

Trenkenschuh and Markie Gallegos, who also had a pick, formed an effective inside linebacking tandem and benefited from a defensive line frequently in the Ellensburg backfield.

Defensive ends Dorian Ortega and Brayden Grams and tackle Jayden Silva each recorded multiple tackles for loss and made it difficult for Ellensburg to run the ball, especially in the first half.

Bulldog back Carlos Patino was able to churn out 92 yards, with 60 coming after intermission behind 6-foot-5 tackle Silas Stewman -- who pounded a couple of Vikings into Andreotti Field's soft grass surface.

Ellensburg (0-2, 0-2) will travel to Ephrata next Friday, as the Vikings' schedule should stiffen considerably.

Selah hosts West Valley next Friday and travels to Othello the following week.

Kingston knows the tests are about to get tougher, but he believes the results of the first two weeks have helped spur a change in perception.

"I think people are looking at Selah different than from the last few years," Kingston said. "Teams are starting to not want to play us.

"We've got a lot of confidence going into Week 3."
