New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed bipartisan legislation Saturday that requires state agencies to disclose how they are using AI systems without undermining state residents' civil liberties.
Tech groups lobbied the Democratic governor to reject the measure (S.B. 7543B) requiring New York bodies overseeing law enforcement, health care, finance, transit, and other services adhere to some of the strictest oversight in the nation. The AFL-CIO and other labor groups backed the measure, which lawmakers approved overwhelmingly in June.
