A year later, family still searching for answers in deadly hit-and-run crash on I-240

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Never forgotten.

A family is remembering a loved one who was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 240 last year.

"If there is a way I can see him again, if he can see how I'm doing ... " said Elizabeth Arellano, the victim's sister. "I just want to make him proud."

The family of Jesus Arellano held a vigil Tuesday to mourn his death.

Arellano was just weeks from turning 21, but his life was taken by a hit-and-run driver one year ago today.

"How do you live with that guilt and not stop?" his sister Elizabeth said.

The crash happened Dec. 10 on I-240 near the Walnut Grove exit. Jesus's sister Maria said that her 20-year-old brother and his friends were driving home from a party in a Nissan Sentra.

Memphis Police said the same car was involved in a crash around 5 a.m.

Investigators said when Arellano got out of the car after the wreck, another car, possibly a gray Infiniti, hit him and left. Jesus Arellano died on scene and a woman was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

"It's not fair. You took something so important to us," Maria Arellano said. "We think he's going to come home but he's not."

Maria said her brother was hardworking, loving and always willing to give a hand. She remembers the time she and Jesus came from Mexico as kids to live in Memphis.

While the family tries to heal, they said they hope the driver accused of killing Jesus Arellano is held accountable for leaving a home that will never be the same.

"Just be careful and beware of those bad friends and we miss you," Maria Arellano said. "Hope you are OK up there."

Memphis Police are still searching for the driver responsible for the hit and run. If you have information, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
