JASPER COUNTY, Ind. -- An elderly woman in a wheelchair died Thursday morning in Northwest Indiana as snow was limiting visibility on I-65.
At around 11:35 a.m., police responded to northbound lanes of I-65 near the 228 mile marker -- which is two miles south of the Demotte/Roselawn exit.
Police believe a white Chevy Trailblazer was traveling northbound when the driver failed to recognize that traffic slowed in front of them due to blowing snow.
The Trailblazer rear-ended a Toyota Sienna with the impact causing the Sienna to be pushed into the rear of a semi-truck.
A woman sitting in a wheelchair in the back of the van, later identified as Mary Sumara, 77, of Demotte, died as a result of the crash.
The driver of the Trailblazer and a one-year-old passenger were transported with non life-threatening injuries.
