PORT of Newcastle says it will support all cargo types' "legal right to access the port" ahead of protest action in the Hunter expected later this month.
A group called Rising Tide has planned 'The People's Blockade' for 27 November until 2 December, focused on Foreshore Park in Newcastle.
Rising Tide is opposed to the fossil fuels sector and the Hunter Valley coal industry, citing its impact on human-driven climate change.
A spokesperson for Port of Newcastle remains committed to facilitating safe, lawful trade for all sectors, "while also realising our strategic vision to diversify our trade types and assist the state with the renewable energy rollout".
"We are committed to working in coordination with NSW Police, Port Authority of NSW, and industry operators to ensure measures are in place to protect legal trade and the interests of customers, tourists, and the wider region," the spokesperson said.
"Our number one priority is the safety of our community and port users, and we work with regulators to uphold safety for all."
The spokesperson said unlawful protest actions that disrupt diverse legal trade "are unacceptable".
"Port of Newcastle will always support all cargo types' legal right to access the port and we'll continue investing in infrastructure and innovations that drive a prosperous and sustainable regional future," the spokesperson said.
Rising Tide has called on the Port of Newcastle to stop the coal ships from dawn Saturday November 29 to dusk November 30.
"The Port of Newcastle exports more coal than any port on Earth, shipping out hundreds of thousands of tonnes of coal every single day," Rising Tide stated.
