Field hockey falls in game one but pulls out victorious in game two
Slippery Rock field hockey had a two-game weekend. With a loss last Saturday and a win last Sunday, their record is now 3-1 with only two games left before the start of their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
Game One
The Rock kicked off the weekend with their first game on September 13 against Lander University.
While the first period remained scoreless, the attempts were there for Lander. Four shots on goal were made, all saved by The Rock's Leah Riegling.
The White and Green made up for it in the second period by being the first to put points on the board with a goal from Madison Shomo, with the assist of Roz Mikulak.
Exactly four minutes later, Lander came back with a goal of their own to tie the score.
The second period ended with six penalty corners and two shot attempts for Lander, but nothing came of it.
The Bearcats opened the third period with two penalty corners and three shot attempts. But The Rock put a point up, taking the lead again, 2-1, just over eight minutes into the third. Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the period.
The fourth period was a lot of back and forth with fouls on both Slippery Rock and Lander.
The Bearcats pulled even to tie it at two with five minutes left in the fourth period, forcing the game into overtime.
The Rock was unable to get another shot off in OT, and Lander took the win after a penalty stroke goal.
Game Two
Slippery Rock finished their weekend play last Sunday with a victory over Converse University.
The scoreboard remained empty for the first two periods, despite a combined seven shot attempts from both teams.
Riley Cloude, who made a shot attempt in the first and second period, made a season high with three shot attempts and her first shot on goal for the season.
The first goal of the game came from Hilary Hoffman with only seconds left in the third period.
Three shot attempts came before it for the Valkyries, but they could not find the back of the net during the third.
Converse put up another three-shot attempts, and Sage Pilarski succeeded in adding a notch for the Valkyries to make it a tie game with a little more than five minutes left in the fourth period.
Lucy Hutchinson delivered a shot attempt with seconds left but came up empty.
Overtime opened with a penalty corner for the White and Green.
Converse tried to close out the overtime twice and came up short both times.
Slippery Rock came out on top when Hutchinson scored the winning goal to end the game.
The team will go on to play Shippensburg University this Friday at Robb Sports Complex.
