Avel eCare, a telemedicine service provider, has acquired Kansas-based Hospital Pharmacy Management (HPM), a company engaged in remote medication order review and onsite pharmacy management services.

This strategic move aims to enhance Avel eCare's existing remote pharmacy services and address staffing shortages within health systems.

Avel eCare CEO Doug Duskin said: "We recognise the critical role that pharmacies play in health systems. This deal will enable us to expand our telepharmacy support and management services at a time when health systems are struggling with staffing shortages among other challenges."

HPM has delivered hospital pharmacy management services and remote pharmacy order verification to 51 hospitals throughout Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas since 1993.

Although not a pharmacy staffing agency, it has played a key role in connecting hospitals with seasoned pharmacists who operate both on-site and remotely.

HPM partner and co-owner Bill Walden said: "We're thrilled to join forces with Avel which has been at the forefront of remote pharmacy services for more than a decade.

"From the ER to the ICU and everywhere in between, pharmacy plays a significant role in improving patient safety and quality of care."

This acquisition aims to bolster the Avel Pharmacy team, providing hospitals and healthcare systems with a solution to address shortages of pharmacists-in-charge and alleviate burnout.

The team provides round-the-clock access to licensed, hospital-trained pharmacists for medication order entry, reviews along with verifications, and other clinical pharmacy services.

Avel Pharmacy's team is known for processing millions of orders annually, identifying improvement opportunities, and conducting ongoing monitoring to prevent adverse drug events and enhance care delivery.
