Charleston's 18th annual Italian Film Fest will feature director Q&As, fashion show

Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival has announced its 18th annual celebration of contemporary Italian cinema and culture. This year's event is set for Nov. 14-17 at the Queen Street Playhouse, 20 Queen St., Charleston.

The festival will screen 13 feature films and documentaries with select showings holding Q&A sessions immediately following.

Featured films include Matteo Garrone's magnificent "Io capitano," a hero's journey featuring two young cousins emigrating from Senegal; Edoardo De Angelis' "Comandante," a compelling drama that examines the conflict between wartime protocols and maritime ethics; and John Maggio's documentary "Milano: The Inside Story of Italian Fashion." Maggio will be among the special guests attending the festival.

There will also be two movies with Jewish themes: "Rapito," by Marco Bellocchio, which tells the true story of Edgardo Mortara a young Jew forcibly taken from his family and raised as a Christian; and "Terezin," by Gabriele Guidi, a love story between musicians set in Prague during World War II.

Other highlights include:

"Enea" by Pietro Castellitto, a story of two adventurers"Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples" by Trudie Styler"Marcello Mio" by Christophe Honoré, featuring Chiara Mastroianni

"As usual, the movies presented by Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival highlight contemporary life in Italy and pay tribute to its history and traditions," Festival Founder and Artistic Director Giovanna De Luca said in a press release. "...The diversity of this year's offerings is notable, with a terrific mix of drama, comedy and documentary."

John Maggio will appear in person to discuss his movie "Milano," and a fashion show held in partnership with M. Dumas & Sons will follow the screening at The Principle Gallery, 125 Meeting St. in Charleston at 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 16. Other special guests include "Terezin" actor Mauro Conte and co-directors Valentina Signorelli and Cecilia Zoppelletto of the documentary "A.P. Giannini - Bank to the Future."

"Italian cinema is characterized by ingenuity and great storytelling," De Luca said. "These movies demonstrate those qualities very well."

Tickets cost $15 for each screening and may be purchased at nuovocinemaitaliano.com. Students and veterans with identification will be allowed $5 tickets at the box office.
