Repsol SA Patents Innovative Cementing Method with Magnetic Nanoparticles

According to GlobalData's company profile on Repsol, Photoelectrochemical water splitting was a key innovation area identified from patents. Repsol's grant share as of June 2024 was 55%. Grant share is based on the ratio of number of grants to total number of patents.

The granted patent US12024672B2 outlines a novel method of cementing that incorporates magnetic nanoparticles into a cement slurry. The method involves mixing a cement composition with magnetic nanoparticles, which are present in a weight range of 0.01% to 10% by weight of cement. These nanoparticles have a mean particle size between 10 nm and 50 nm, as determined by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and a crystallite mean size that is at least 80% of the mean particle size. The patent specifies that the nanoparticles can have a hydrophilic shell and may be magnetite nanoparticles. Additionally, the method includes the application of an alternating magnetic field at a frequency of 100±5 kHz for a duration ranging from 1 to 25 minutes.

The patent further details the characteristics of the magnetic nanoparticles, including a particle size distribution defined by a logarithmic distribution with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 25% or lower. The cement composition can also include a retarder and is applicable for various uses, such as pavement foundations, maritime works, and the cementing of pipe strings in well bores. The cement used in this method can be Portland cement, and the innovative incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles aims to enhance the properties and performance of the cementing process.
