Republican incumbent James A. "Jay" Leftwich Jr. held onto his seat representing Virginia House District 90 for another two-year term, according to unofficial election night results.
The Associated Press called the race for Leftwich to beat his Democrat challenger and political newcomer Rodney Nickens Jr. With 93% of votes counted Tuesday night, Leftwich received 59.6% of votes, while Nickens received 40.4% of the vote. Results are finalized once canvassing is completed in the coming weeks. More than 37,000 voters in the district turned out for this year's election.
District 90 encompasses part of Chesapeake and had a strong Republican lean going into the election.
Leftwich, an attorney, has served in the House since 2014. He's previously helped push to eliminate the car tax. He's also pointed to his work on legislation upgrading the 911 system and capping the cost of insulin as some highlights during his tenure in the Virginia House. Leftwich said his top priority is to help manage economic challenges for Virginians.
