MANILA, Philippines -- Every ARMY knows the idol-favorite Korean gelato brand, Blue Polar, after K-pop global group BTS gave it a glowing recommendation.
The shop originally opened in 2023 in Apgujeong, South Korea, an area known for its food and shops frequented by idols and celebrities. It quickly gained popularity among K-pop fans after restaurant Woo Hyang Woo served Blue Polar gelato during BTS Jungkook's GOLDEN Listening Party.
During the party, BTS Taehyung found himself especially attached to the affogato gelato. He told the owner, Hyun Jeong Kim, that if ARMYs went to the restaurant, he would pay for their gelato. True to his word, he paid for hundreds of gelatos in the span of five months.
Apart from its iconic affogato, they also offer flavors of milk, sweet potato, matcha, and chocolate. The brand's gelato is known for combining traditional gelato-making techniques with modern tastes.
Since gaining popularity, ARMYs from all over the world have flown into Apgujeong just to try the iconic gelato -- it became an online global sensation that quickly.
Following high demand, the brand began expanding into different branches in Gwangyang and even New York City.
It was BTS fan and businesswoman Catherine Cabalatungan who decided to bring Blue Polar to the Philippines for the first time. "It's not an easy journey to be right here today, but then we are here already," she shared at the brand launch this October in Poblacion, Makati City.
But while fans are excited to dive into the different flavors, the important question remains: did the affogato live up to Taehyung's hype?
Frankly, yes. One fan described it as a "cozy little indulgence," which combines sweet and creamy gelato with the boldness of espresso.
Meanwhile, Blue Polar's matcha gelato and its deeply earthy flavors blend seamlessly with the rich and velvety texture of gelato. The small cookie biscuit adds a small crunch that tops the experience.
Now open in Poblacion, fans can try V's beloved affogato, with the option to pair it with different coffees and drinks. -- Alyana Fabella/Rappler.com
