Elk Fire in Rio Blanco County 100% contained

DENVER (KDVR) -- The Elk Fire in Rio Blanco County, as of Saturday, has now been 100% contained, said the incident management team for the fires.

In a post to Facebook, the Incident Management Team for the Elk and Lee Fires in Rio Blanco County said that the Elk Fire burned 14,518 acres and was 100% contained as of Saturday night.

"Firefighters continued to mop up and secure firelines today, targeting areas where the fire was creeping and smoldering," said the team in the post.

The information comes after the Elk Fire was reported as having 93% containment on Friday.

In the update, it also noted that the Lee Fire has burned 137,453 acres and was 42% contained.

"The increased acreage on the Lee Fire is a result of interior pockets that have burned out and more precise mapping. There has been no change to containment lines," said the Incident Management Team.

This announcement of the Elk Fires' 100% containment comes after Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency on Thursday for the wildfires along the Western Slope.
