FedEx sued by former employee over racial discrimination, court docs show

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A former employee of the FedEx Corporation is bringing a lawsuit against the company for alleged racial discrimination.

According to court documents, Barbara Blake, the former employee, began working for FedEx in 1997.

She briefly left the company in 2001 and was later rehired in 2004 as a security officer; Blake worked as a security officer until 2024, when she was fired.

Blake claims that when she was terminated, she was let go without any warning or written notice.

On December 23, 2021, before her firing, Blake informed her manager that a non-Black co-worker was making offensive racial comments in her presence and other Black co-workers.

Specifically, Blake explained to her manager that the co-worker used racially offensive language regularly, including referring to Black people using terms such as "nappy-headed" and "heathens", and he bragged about a beating of a Black woman while he was a police officer.

Court records say that when Blake confronted the co-worker, she was reprimanded by management.

Blake alleges that her multiple complaints to management had been ignored and often resulted in her being disciplined.

Following her termination, on March 21, 2024, Blake filed a complaint to challenge the basis of her termination.

In the complaint, Blake reiterated she was the victim of a hostile work environment because she had reported her co-worker for his references to Black females as "nappy-headed heifers."

Blake is now seeking damages, including her attorney fees and losses resulting from her termination.
