A deadly fire in Western Massachusetts this week claimed the life of one person and left seven others without shelter.

The fire broke out at a multifamily house on the corner of Artisan and Chicopee streets in Chicopee on Tuesday, March 11, around 4 p.m., the State Fire Marshal's Office said.

When Chicopee firefighters arrived at the scene, they were told one person had escaped the flames, but an adult who had remained inside to try and contain the blaze had died.

That person's name has not been released as of Tuesday night.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
