A 20-year-old Anaheim man made his first appearance in court Monday in connection with a high-speed crash last year in Fountain Valley that killed a 6-year-old girl.

Jose Alexis Lopezcanseco was charged Sept. 24 with gross vehicular manslaughter and child abuse and endangerment, both felonies, and faces a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim as well as an infraction for speeding in excess of 100 mph.

Lopezcanseco was arrested Saturday on the complaint, according to court records. He made his first appearance in court in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana on Monday when his arraignment was rescheduled for Dec. 20 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

The crash occurred about 12:15 p.m. Nov. 10, 2023, at Newhope Street at Heil Avenue, police said.

An Infiniti G37 southbound on Newhope Street slammed into a Mercedes-Benz C300 turning left from northbound Newhope to westbound Heil Avenue, police said. The impact vaulted the Infiniti into a southwest corner light pole, splitting the car in half and killing a 6-year-old girl from Anaheim in the back seat, police said.
