Jeremiah Duhu helps Beaumont football team roll past Summit

FONTANA -- Coach Jeff Steinberg's return to Miller High School on Thursday night was a smashing success.

Steinberg traveled to Miller with his Beaumont football team, which defeated host Summit 34-0 in a nonleague contest. Miller is the scene of past glories for Steinberg, who led that program to a Citrus Belt League title in 2008.

"I love coming here," Steinberg said of his former school. "This is the second time I've been here with Beaumont, and it's been good experiences both times."

Now Steinberg has another CBL contender in Beaumont, which overwhelmed previously unbeaten Summit .

Summit (2-1) could not stop Beaumont's vaunted passing attack nor solve its aggressive defense.

Junior Jeremiah Duhu replaced the graduated Christopher Cooper at quarterback, and Beaumont (3-0) has not missed a beat. Duhu threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a score.

Senior receiver Braedon Miller caught three passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

"It was a good team win," Miller said. "We threw a lot of different things at them offensively. (Duhu) is amazing. He's real good. We got him next year, too, so he has a bright future."

Miller's 23-yard touchdown catch with 7:49 left in the first quarter put Beaumont ahead 7-0.

Early in the second quarter, Duhu took it himself, scampering 32 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Then Beaumont recovered an onside kick, and Duhu connected with Miller on a 38-yard scoring pass to put the Cougars up 20-0 with 8:51 left in the second quarter.

Beaumont's offensive line of Christian Flores Martinez, Roman Angulo, Joseph Gonzales, William Allen, and Gambino Diaz provided excellent protection for Duhu.

Summit tried to run, but Beaumont defenders such as Tyler Dyer, Christian Cooper, Dominic Elysee, Amir Washington and Matt Casas limited the SkyHawks.

"I feel great," Elysee said. "I felt dominant the whole time. We did a lot of research on this team, and it was a big challenge, but we came out with the dub (win). We just needed to stop the run."

Duhu added one more scoring strike in the first half, a 42-yard toss to Kainalu Johnston with 2:40 left.

Neither offense scored in the second half, though Cleve Johnson had a weaving 64-yard punt return for a score.

Besides the excellence of Duhu and Miller, Johnston caught five passes for 111 yards and one score. Duhu led the Cougars in rushing with 66 yards on eight carries.

The victory was Steinberg's 201st. He picked up his 200th a week earlier against San Jacinto. Some of those victories came at Miller where Steinberg won that cherished CBL title in 2008 and almost won another the previous year.

Summit passed for only 32 yards and its rushing attack was not enough to compensate.

"We're not a team that plays very well from behind the sticks," said Summit coach Nick Matheny, referring to negative rushing plays and penalties. "We got behind the sticks a few times early in the game, and you can't do that against Beaumont.."

Mark Mitchell III led the Summit offense with 79 yards rushing on 14 carries. Maximus McCarthy added 60 yards rushing on seven carries.
