Comedian Ben Roy to headline Vail Comedy Show this week

Vail Comedy Show welcomes Maine native and Denver-based comedian Ben Roy for a special pop up show on Wednesday August 21 at Mango's in Red Cliff.

Ben's latest comedy special is on Hulu, he starred in and created a TV show that ran for three seasons on TruTV and later HBO MAX called 'Those Who Can't.' Roy answered these questions in advance of his visit.

Have you ever performed in the Vail Valley?

I have a few times over the last twenty years of doing stand up. It's always a blast. Mark puts on killer shows. You wild mountain people are a ton of fun. Weird, but fun.

Do you have a favorite Colorado comedy memory?

Wow, this is a tough question. There's a ton of moments but I'd have to say seeing Josh Blue win Last Comic Standing was huge for me. It made it feel like doing something on a national scale from here in Colorado was attainable. If you work hard, it can be done. That was so cool to experience.

Your latest special is being picked up by Hulu, how did that come about and how do you feel about it?

It's amazing. I've worked for twenty years. Had a lot of ups and downs during that time. Some real highs and lows. But I've just tried to persevere, stay consistent, and keep pushing myself, despite how quiet it got at points. The recognition and exposure feels real nice. And it's fun to be another comic waving the Colorado flag high.

What do you know about Vail Comedy Show?

I know Mark is the man and the show will be great and you weirdo mountain folks will show up for fun. That I know.

Any major events coming up?

Just lots of travel with my band SPELLS and doing stand up. I love to stay busy between music and comedy. I'm a bit of a golden retriever; if no one is throwing the ball to me I tend to nap a lot.

You live in Denver but tour nationally, how does Colorado compare to other markets?

In my opinion and I am, admittedly, absolutely biased, it's the best in the country. We have established comics, up and comers, and a huge crop of open mic-ers all making big waves. We are the scene to watch, without question.

For the future, I'm working on my next hour special; I'm hoping to land a home for that as well. Plus, continuing to build up my band SPELLS with touring and festivals. And, fingers crossed, sell another TV project.

In the immediate future: tell some jokes with the fine folks of Red Cliff.

Vail Comedy Show will pop up in Lionshead on Sunday August 25 with Sunee Dhaliwal from Vancouver, Canada at El Sabor. In September Comedy Cellar regular Daniel Simonsen from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will visit the valley. In October Steven Rogers who tours with Brian Regan will perform in Vail Village.
