Re "One way to control health care costs: crack down on dubious diagnoses" (Aug. 11): It was with interest that I read your editorial about dubious diagnoses that are submitted to Medicare for enhanced reimbursement. While I agree that the practice detailed is dubious, leads to higher costs for Medicare, and should be prohibited, the fact is that the current rules permit it. As a physician, I, like many of my colleagues, view UnitedHealth Group very negatively. Many of us believe they put profits ahead of health care by many of their actions, so I'm definitely not defending the insurer or its actions. However, UnitedHealth is acting like the for-profit company it is. Are we surprised? Should we expect it to behave any differently? Its shareholders don't.
