If you had Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile on your watchlist and were waiting for the universe to send you a sign of when to watch it, this is it. In case you have been living under a rock, the movie adapts one of the most famous children's stories in the world, and it debuted in theaters in 2022. Now, the live-action and animated movie has found a new home on HBO Max, and it is already available to stream.
Due to the popularity of the story, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is the type of adaptation that everyone wants to be a part of. Hector P. Valenti, a magician who finds a singing crocodile and tries to profit off the animal, is played by Oscar-winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men). The title character is digital, but Ben Palacios (Running Point) provided the motion capture of Lyle, while mega-superstar Shawn Mendes lent his singing voice to the adorable reptile.
You likely know the story of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by heart. First, the animal is found by an opportunistic hack who sees in Lyle the opportunity to make a fortune. Then, Lyle meets a family and helps them get past some of their issues while he learns the value of friendship and love with the Primms. The cast also features Constance Wu (The Friend), Scoot MacNairy (A Complete Unknown), Ego Nwodim (Saturday Night Live), Winslow Fegley (The Naughty Nine), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), and Jason Kravits (Snow White).
'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile's Score Is Through the Roof
It's pretty much a crime to say anything bad about such a classic story, and luckily critics seemed to have a good enough time with the adventure to give it a decent score. The movie received a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty good. But fans thoroughly enjoyed it: The audience score of the adventure went as high as 93%, indicating that your childhood certainly hasn't been ruined by the adaptation.
One of the decisions that made Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile work was its choice of directors. Josh Gordon and Will Speck displayed a knack for comedy after helming titles that flirted with the absurd, like Blades of Glory and Office Christmas Party. So, the duo knew how to merge a singing crocodile story with a wholesome family movie. The screenplay was written by Will Davies, who previously showcased his talent for adapting stories by penning the script of How to Train Your Dragon.
