No. 18 Arizona gymnastics takes down Iowa State on Valentine's Day

The Arizona Gymcats watch on as their teammate performs her beam routine in McKale Center for the final time this season on March 13. Arizona won the meet by beating Southern Connecticut State by over three points.

The University of Arizona gymnastics team defeated Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7:00 p.m., earning a team score of 195.900 over the Cyclones' 194.525.

Senior Alysen Fears won the all-around with 39.325 and also happened to tie her career-high on beam with a 9.90. Her performance throughout earned her the gymnast of the meet.

Arizona started off the meet scoring a 48.775 on vault, as sophomore Sophie Derr led the rotation with a 9.80. Junior Emma Strom and senior Emily Mueller earned 9.775s. Senior Elizabeth LaRusso ended with a 9.750.

The Wildcats would secure a 49.050 in their second rotation on bars. Mueller led the Wildcats early with a stellar 9.775. Sophomore Abigayle Martin continued the team's success with a 9.80. Freshman Aubrey Krohnfeldt added even more to the Arizona advantage with a 9.825. Fears closed out the rotation to push the Cats over the edge into the lead and earned a 9.90. Arizona would lead the second rotation with 97.825 to Iowa State's 97.525.

Balance Beam

The Wildcats would shine, securing a 48.70 in the third rotation of the night. Fears earned her second 9.90 of the night. Fears' time on the beam would set a season-high and tie her career-high. Fifth-year Elena Deets, Martin, and Mueller would continue Arizona's success with three 9.85s. Arizona maintained its lead of 146.525 over Iowa State's 146.150 moving into the final rotation.

Arizona would put up a 49.375 on floor in the fourth and final rotation. LaRusso opened the rotation with a strong 9.85. Fears put her name on the board again with a 9.875. Arizona would get another 9.85 out of a stellar Krohnfeldt performance. Strom and Mueller closed out the meet with dual 9.90s to clinch Arizona's victory over the Cyclones, 195.900 to 194.525.
